ITBP Chief Officially Confirms Ongoing China Border Face-offs in Arunachal Pradesh

As 2026 draws to a close looks like 2027, is going to be a significantly troublesome year for India with regards to China. What started in Galwan in 2020, may culminate in a ultimate and much awaited clash between India and China in 2027 across the LAC, right from Aksai Chin to Arunachal Pradesh. This was all the more confirmed by the ITBP Chief Shatrujeet Kapur, when he made the following statements.

1. Ongoing Border Situations: He confirmed that a face-off situation arose recently at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh and mentioned that these episodes are still continuing.

2. Praise for Elite Commando Units: He highlighted the performance of the newly introduced "Shaurya" commando teams, stating they executed exceptional work in handling the confrontations along the border.

3. Modernization & Tactics: Addressing challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), he noted the necessity of tactical training—referencing the specialized "Strike" course—to prepare troops and avoid Galwan-like escalations. He also emphasized integrating drone platoons to match operational needs in high-altitude border areas.

So whatever the ITBP Chief is not new but the timing of saying it is important, coming just a few days after India officially renamed 28 locations in Ladakh that were vehemently opposed by China. The 4000 kms plus Line of Actual Control (LAC) along India’s northeastern frontier from Aksai Chin to Arunachal Pradesh, is witnessing renewed friction. In an official acknowledgement from the top leadership of India’s border guarding forces, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur confirmed that Indian and Chinese troops have experienced face-offs at multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking at the Himveer Samman Samaroh (annual felicitation ceremony) in Rajasthan's Alwar, DG of ISI provided operational insights into the ground reality along the eastern sector.

Key Takeaways from the ITBP Chief’s Address

  • Ongoing Face-offs at Multiple Points: DG Kapur disclosed that a situation developed where face-offs occurred across several locations along the Arunachal border and stated that these confrontations are still ongoing. This marks the first formal official confirmation of recent standoff incidents along this sector.
  • Deployment of 'Shaurya Commandos': Highlighted during the speech was the deployment of the ITBP’s newly raised special combat units—the Shaurya commandos. Kapur commended these teams for playing an "exemplary role" and performing outstandingly while responding to People's Liberation Army (PLA) maneuvers.
  • New Tactical Training Course ("Strike"): To counter asymmetric challenges and avoid Galwan-like physical escalations, the ITBP has introduced a dedicated battlecraft and tactics training module named "Strike". The course is designed to equip frontline troops with modern border-control tactics.
  • Integration of Drone Technology: Acknowledging the rapid modernization and heavy investments by China's PLA and Border Defence Regiments (BDR), Kapur emphasized that conventional mechanisms alone are difficult to rely on. Consequently, the ITBP is raising specialized drone platoons across all border-guarding battalions, backed by in-house drone manufacturing and pilot training initiatives.
  • Reaffirming Mountain Warfare Roots: Kapur pointed out that the ITBP was originally raised as a mountain guerrilla force before being tasked with formal border guarding duties in 2004. He emphasized that the force must retain its core mountain-warfare tactics while guarding the 3,488-km LAC.

Official Clarifications & Diplomatic Response

Following the public remarks, government sources clarified that the ITBP DG’s comments were made in the context of routine operational preparedness, long-term force deployment, and ongoing frontline alertness along the sensitive border rather than referencing any single specific tactical incident.

Addressing the situation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that friction points along the border typically arise when Chinese patrols depart from established, traditional patrolling patterns in specific pockets. The MEA reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining peace and tranquility on the border through diplomatic and military dialogue mechanisms.

What This Means for India-China Border Security

The ITBP Chief’s remarks reflect a clear strategic shift toward high-tech readiness along the eastern LAC. By combining specialized elite commandos (Shaurya platoons) with battalion-level aerial surveillance tools (drones) and refined battlecraft training, Indian border forces are systematically fortifying their posture to manage patrol overlaps and prevent sudden border disruptions.
